Docip's Weekly News No. 429

2024-12-23

SEASON'S GREETING

Dear Friend of Docip,

As the year draws to a close, you are hereby receiving the last weekly newsletter before the year 2025.

Let us anticipate that this new year will bring hope and renewal. The world has been destabilized by numerous conflicts and by an environment that reminds us every day that we must change the model in order to preserve life and limit the effects of climate change. Indigenous Peoples are the first and most faithful guardians of this world and its diversity, both natural and cultural.

Their messages, advocating moderate use of the resources offered by nature, respect for diversity and the non-mercantile sharing of their age-old knowledge, are fully relevant in this context and explain the successes of the past year: the recognition of the role of Indigenous Peoples in the preservation of biodiversity at COP 16 in Cali, the continuation of the process launched to find concrete ways to strengthen the participation of Indigenous Peoples in the work of the Human Rights Council, and the signing of the WIPO Treaty on Intellectual Property, Genetic Resources and Associated Traditional Knowledge.

Docip continues its support work, whether it be during sessions of UN bodies, by co-organizing caucuses and providing translation and interpretation services, or outside of conferences, by accompanying delegations on advocacy visits to Brussels or Geneva. Docip’s work also includes ongoing dissemination of information relevant to advocacy via this weekly newsletter and social networks, documentation of delegations' participation at the UN, as well as training of delegations in Geneva and in the field.

The team has been further strengthened at the end of the year by the recruitment of a documentation manager. In addition, the Geneva office has been expanded to improve working conditions for the team and to enable us to provide the best possible services.

We are delighted to be able to serve you again in the coming year, and we are honored by the trust you have placed in us.

Our work would not be possible without the dozens of volunteers who work alongside us, the translators, the interpreters and the voluntary work of our Foundation Board. It could not exist without the financial support of the European Union, the State of Geneva, the City of Geneva and the Saami Parliament of Norway.

We wish you an excellent year’s end, and we look forward to seeing you again in 2025.

The Docip Team
