Arriving from John F. Kennedy (JFK), La Guardia and Newark Airports
There are multiple shuttle buses from all three airports, J.F. Kennedy, La Guardia and Newark to New York City. Listed below are a few options, but please feel free to take any form of transportation that is most convenient and suitable for you.
- Olympic Airport Express. This service is between Newark Airport and New York City. Buses depart every 5-10 minutes from Newark to New York. For more information, please call 1+(908) 354-3330, or toll free outside NY and NJ 1+(877) 894-9155 or email olympia@coachusa.com. Website address: www.coachusa.com/olympia/
- Newark Airport Express. This service is between Newark Airport and New York City, departing every 15-30 minutes. For more information, please call 1+(877) 863-9275. Website address is: www.coachusa.com/olympia/ss.newarkairport.asp
- Super Shuttle (blue van) is also available from all three airports to New York City. For more information, please call: 1+(212) 209-7000 (office), 1+(212) 258-3826 (general reservations). For reservations, try to give them 24 hours notice if possible Website: www.supershuttle.com

As most of you will be arriving by air, you will need methods of transportation to and from the three airports located in the greater New York area. This transportation will bring you
into New York City, arriving at one of three central locations, Pennsylvania (Penn) Station, the Port Authority or Grand Central Station. The closest site to the United Nations is Grand Central Station. All three locations have access to buses or subways, which are the easiest and most economical ways to travel in New York. Yellow taxis are always available, but are more expensive.
At each of the central locations in New York City, Pennsylvania (Penn) Station, the Port Authority or Grand Central Station, an information booth is readily available for using public transportation. If you wish to access this information ahead of time, the website addresses for public transportation in New York City via subway or bus - Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA) - service, as well as Metro North commuter trains which serve the outlying areas, is: http//ww.mta.info/
Departing New York City
When departing New York City you can hail a taxi on the street, call in advance for a radio taxi to pick you up at your hotel, contact Super Shuttle to pick you up at your hotel, or take a special airport coach bus directly from Grand Central Terminal. Taxi rates are based on the meter reading, plus tolls, plus approximately 15% tip. You should be prepared to pay from $35-50, depending on the time of day and the traffic congestion.
For Newark Airport, a taxi can be very costly and is therefore not advisable unless you are sharing the cost with another passenger. Radio taxis (including the many car and limousine services) can be a more affordable option. Inquire at your hotel for rates and arrangements. The Super Shuttle van, for example, will pick you up at your hotel, and offers flat-rate service to both La Guardia and Kennedy Airports. Allow at least an hour for a trip to JFK Airport, and 40-45 minutes to La Guardia. If you are leaving during peak traffic hours, between 8:00-10:00am or 4:00-7:00pm, you should allow more time.
- JFK and La Guardia airports: The special direct airport coach bus, run by the New York Airport Service, departs from 125 Park Avenue, between 41st and 42nd Streets (across from Grand Central Terminal). Tickets must be purchased inside the office, not on the bus. For JFK Airport the one-way fare is $15.00. Allow 55 minutes' travel time to the airport. For La Guardia Airport, the one-way fare is $12.00. Allow 45 minutes' travel time to the airport. Both buses leave every 20-30 minutes or so, and make stops outside all major airline terminals. Call New York Airport Service at 1+(212) 875-8200 for a specific schedule. Or visit their website at www.nyairportservice.com
- Newark Airport: Olympia Airport Express bus departs from 41st St., between Lexington and Park, every 15-30 minutes. Travel time to the airport is approximately 45 minutes. One-way fare is $14.
Transportation in the NYC Metropolitan Area
Taxis are easily hailed on the street. Licensed cabs are painted yellow and a light on the roof of the vehicle indicates that the taxi is available. Cab drivers generally know the city well. If you decide to visit another borough, however, you may wish to find out in advance if the driver is familiar with the area, or be prepared to give directions.
Subways are a fast means of travel, with several lines running North-South in Manhattan. With few exceptions, subways do not run East-West. The fare is $2.00 and exact change is not necessary as Metro cards (see below) must be purchased in booths to gain entrance to the trains. Metro cards may also be used on buses. For your safety, subway travel is not recommended during late evening hours.
Buses are a safe, efficient means of travel in New York. They run North-South on most major avenues, and make stops every two blocks. If a bus sign is marked "Limited", it stops every eight blocks. Buses running East-West traverse only major cross-streets such as: 86th, 79th, 72nd, 57th, 42nd, 33rd, 28th, 23rd and 14th Streets. The fare is $2.00. Exact change in the form of coins or Metro card is required.
The Metro card is a plastic card that can be used for subway and bus transportation and offers slight volume discount. The cards are available from subway token booths. There are two kinds: refillable (pay per ride) and all-you-can-ride (flat rate of $7 for one day, $24 for 7days or $76 for 30 days). In addition to transfers from bus to bus, Metro cards allow transfers from bus to subway and subway to bus as well. Your length of stay and anticipated frequency of use will help you decide which card to buy. More information is available in the Metro card brochure, which can be found in subway stations and at tourist information kiosks.
Restaurants
The main cafeteria at the United Nations has a large variety of food at low prices (for New York standards). It is usually open from 8:00 a.m. to 8:30 p.m.
There are numerous delis within walking distance of the UN, on 2nd Avenue (Yitzak Rabin Way) between East 42nd Street & East 46th Street as well as on 3rd Avenue between East 42nd Street & East 46th Street. These delis offer a variety of food (sandwiches, salads, fruit etc.) to take-out at considerably low prices.
There are also a number of restaurants, breakfast places, pizzerias etc. with different price ranges in close proximity to the UN (on 2nd and 3rd Avenues). A decent and inexpensive Chinese restaurant is the Hsin Yu on the corner of 2nd Avenue and East 46th Street.
A subway ride away from the UN is the East Village (east of Third Ave, between East 14th Street and Houston Street), where you can find a variety of ethnic foods, reasonably priced. In Chinatown, south of Canal Street and east of Broadway there are many inexpensive Chinese restaurants.
Useful facilities
Computer/internet access
FedEx Kinko’s has locations close to the UN (on the corner of 3rd Avenue and East 47th Street and on 46th Street between 2nd and 3rd Avenues.) However, computer / Internet access at FedEx Kinko’s is expensive ($18/hour or 30 cents/min).
There are a number of Internet cafés in Manhattan which offer better prices, but none of them in close proximity to the United Nations.

There is also a copy machine; however, you can only make a limited number of photocopies (usually no more than 10 copies). You can buy office materials (including paper) outside of the United Nations at Staples on 205 East 42nd Street (between 2nd and 3rd Avenues), or at the Staples store on 730 3rd Avenue and East 45th Street.
